EAST Research Fellow Veranika Laputska co-authored an article titled “17 September 1939: Two Points of View: Polish and Belarusian outlooks” (in Polish) in the book “Cultural analysis of patriotism”, ed. by Katarzyna Kulikowska and Cezary Obracht-Prondzyński.
The article presents two different outlooks in the official discourses of two neighbouring states on the events of 17 September 1939 when the Soviet army invaded eastern Poland whilst the remaining part of the country had previously been occupied by the Nazi Germany. In Belarusian official discourse this historical fact is given as re-unification of Belarus whereas in Poland it is considered to be ‘a stab in the back’ or the fourth partition of Polish lands.
