Belarusian NGOs strategies to strengthen youth engagement

A new study by Andrei Yeliseyeu, Research Director of the EAST Center, explores the barriers to youth engagement and offers a set of recommendations to improve it. Earlier studies and sociological data demonstrate that only around 15% of Belarusian young people take part in civil society activities, while around twice as much are willing to do so.

The study is based on interviews with activists of Belarusian youth organizations and six focus groups with Belarusians aged 20-30 who either have not been engaged but would like to or had past negative experience with engagement in civic activities in Belarus. The focus groups were carried out in Minsk as well as in non-capital regions. The study defines and explains three main types of systematic barriers to youth engagement.
