EU’s asylum seekers from Eastern European countries

There has been a steep increase in asylum applications from Ukrainians in the EU, which reached the numbers of Russian asylum seekers in 2015.

Russians and Ukrainians have different geographical preference, though. While Poland, Germany and France are the main destination countries for Russian applicants, TOP-3 recepients of Ukrainian asylum seekers in 2015 were Italy, Germany and Spain.

Figures for nationals of Belarus, Kazakhstan and Moldova are much lower. Much more Moldovans started seeking asylum in the EU after the visa-free regime was introduced in 2014. The absolute figures remain insigficant, though.
